
Originally from
Ethiopia, Eyakem Gulilat obtained his BAS degree in interdisciplinary studies of
photojournalism and art from Abilene Christian University in 2005. Gulilat participated
in the 2004 Eddie Adams Workshop, an invitation only workshop that pairs emerging
photographers with the industry’s best working photographers and editors. This same
year, Mr. Gulilat was selected for the 45th Annual Randolph William Hearst Award
in the Portrait Personality and Feature competition.
In 2005 Gulilat
participated in the McNair’s Scholars Program, in which he conducted research on
the history of and the purposes behind reenactment. He presented his research at
the 13th Annual McNair’s Scholars conference at Penn State University. Eyakem Gulilat
is currently pursuing his MFA in media arts at the University of Oklahoma. In addition,
he is a Graduate Teachers Assistant and has taught courses ranging from introduction
to Photography to multi-media documentary. He is currently working on a project
entitled “In between,” which focuses on the Third Culture Ethiopian Americans.
